Key considerations for display lighting

While display lighting has traditionally been more commonplace in galleries, museums and retail settings, more homeowners are embracing this element of lighting within their domestic setting. This is particularly true for those who have art, collectables or artefacts that they want to showcase and be able to appreciate more within the home.

There are some key areas to consider when introducing display lighting into the home. Here is Truly Lighting’s advice on making display lighting work in your home:

  1. Think about integrated lighting
Developments in lighting technology have allowed for much greater flexibility over the use and placement of illumination. A strong example of this is using concealed LED strip to enable backlighting or front lighting on shelving. This type of light can provide a soft glow to highlight pieces on the shelves such as ornaments or décor. It also adds extra ambience to a space without being overpowering or distracting.

  2. Consider the use of spots
Spotlights are a simple yet highly effective way of highlighting items or artworks. They can be wall mounted above paintings, recessed into ceilings, or used within shelving to create more focused light onto key pieces.

Many spotlights are compact and discreet so they blend in with the surroundings, and don’t draw attention away from the item they are illuminating. Adjustable spotlights offer more adaptability and allow for pieces to be changed or moved over time.

  1. Colour temperature is important
It is wise to consider colour temperature when planning display lighting. Warm colour temperatures such as 2700K can work well to enhance traditional art, while cooler temperatures may be better matched to modern pieces.
  1. Colour rendering matters too
For lighting artwork or display items, a high CRI score can allow for a greater appreciation of colours, textures and detail. Choosing luminaires that are above 85 CRI will be a good starting point, and anything above 90 CRI will give even better results.
